Yet another post on Geographical Indication (GI)

Today’s celebrity is Ijebu garri
and Intellectual Property (IP) law

Ijebu garri is one of Nigeria’s products that could benefit from Geographical Indication (GI) protection.

To make it know again: GI a form of IP that connects a product to its geographical origin and the reputation or characteristics associated with that place.

In 2021, Africa Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Project (AfrIPI) identified Ijebu garri among Nigerian products with GI potential, noting that such names had not been officially registered nationally or internationally at the time.

Also, a 2025 Geographical Indication Bill is also documented in Nigeria’s National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies repository.

The question is still how Nigeria can translate this potential into effective protection for its local producers and communities.

Our local products could be more than just food or commodities. They can be intellectual property assets.

But I thought cassava can be cultivated in almost every African country and other countries that have loamy soil type can grow and cultivate Cassava.
My question is; is it the name "Ijebu garri" or " garri" itself that would be protected through the use of GI

Kamsi Okafor you asked the most raised question
It is just listed as a candidate for GI protection potential and the main reason is it geographical reput and processing.

Also, a GI does not necessarily require the product to be impossible to replicate elsewhere.

We actually have different varieties of Garri and Garri itself remains a food / product category

We only hope our country catch up with intellectual property rights like this one

Martins Nneji  A bill for passed in 2025 for this effect, titled "A Bill for an Act to Make Provisions for the Registration and Protection of Geographical Indication and for Related Matters"
