Confucius or whoever actually said it first had this thing about labor:
“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. ”
Doing what you like won’t be a job to you.
I think that applies to me. To be frank, It has always applied to me.
But it’s not because I am particularly blessed, or stubbornly bohemian, or built for the grind. It is because I have always known, deep in my bones, that I would not survive the office setting.
The bright lights, the small talks, focus smell in the air, the sitting still. I won’t bring up my ADHD to make this a diagnosis story, Mxm this is more personal than that. This is about rhythm, and how mine has never synced with the world’s default tempo.
The closest I have come to “work” in the traditional sense were my internships. I wrote for BusinessPost.ng, an online business publication where I learned that news has a heartbeat, and deadlines are merciless.
I also assisted at Daar Communications, stationed inside the Ray-Power FM studio, as a studio assistant, and I did some graphics for Faaji FM and video editing work at AIT. Everyone is always doing something all round their shift.
Kudos and salute to all journalists including me… I was and I am still good and will forever be a member of the fourth estate.
At work, I was that weird, nonchalant, not serious, calm, always fidgeting, last-minute-rush superhero; not my word, that’s what they always say and I now hear it as a compliment. I’m the guy who somehow always made it work (Maybe late 👀 “There’s still time”) and does the most work (out of all interns … Some would think I was a staff ).
I know I did too much but as it would always appear “David is not trying”, “He’s enjoying, looking calm and relaxed”
… I only took over the computers and that was my thing, my ground!
They didn’t know about the night bundle 4 hours YouTube videos and the 2 hours figuring it out. Shhhh… Everyone only sees David Magic.
So Diabolical
Still, I remember the ritual: getting up, getting ready, never missing breakfast, then spending almost an hour and sometimes more when Lagos traffic decides to blooming. Get out by 8am, Office hours: 9am to 4pm, And you reach home 6pm.
It mirrored school perfectly. Secondary school started at 7 AM. University at 8 AM. Out of school, and it continues.
Karl Marx put it best when he wrote that the school itself is a teaching factory , laid out with the same capital logic as any production line. A student goes to school to learn the 9 to 5, and then for the capitalist, a labourer.
The bell, the schedule, the obedience to a clock that never asked for your consent. It is, at its root, the training of human beings to renounce their desultory habits of work and identify with the unvarying regularity of the system.
I’m not bantering anything here, I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to add what I’ve learnt about the functionalists and the capitalist theory.
Mxm not a capitalist, not a labourer, So how do I earn?
I have always earned, just not in the way that fills out employment forms. Freelance, Contract work and Things I do not consider jobs because I would do them even if nobody paid me. I write, I draw, I code, and offline, I manage the family farm – since I was nine. I never considered a job; it was my contribution, my responsibility, my way of holding up the house finances. With me on the farm, what is labor cost?
Just do me well after every sale or production, though sometimes they don’t. But I continue. It is convenient in some ways. And it leaves me with time: time for personal projects, for freelancing, for living and to show the people I’m jobless.
But now I am in a hostel, the farms are rested; that chapter is temporarily closed, or maybe permanently.
I am really jobless.
For now, I am in an university. I get some change to sustain myself, by writing, help services and graphics design. The rest of my finance comes from my parents.
I do not like it.
I turned prodigal son. Accepted and supported.
Supported? Yes! And I already have a master degree in handling the rants, the comparison, complaints and comments.
It sure won’t be for so long.
I have given myself 10 days to find a full-time or part-time job. Of course, it has to be remote Mxm I like am in a dorm, after all. I am looking for something with at most three hours a day. Manageable. Something that does not swallow me whole.
I have exams to prepare for. And if I don’t find anything in these 14 days? I have a backup plan. Start freelancing again. Continue and actively manage SDavidPrince as a business again. Though clients are not guaranteed.
Mxm.
To anyone who read this far; I need work.
Hire me. Refer me. Or maybe not
I am here, forever ready. I have always been working, just never in the way the world asked me to.
PS
What I do: I can write and research on anything in a way (Artificial intelligence) AI can never do, I’ve been doing this before AI got popular. I edit and rewrite AI slops and also design graphics.
I’m almost as fast as AI in anything I do. Just a day difference.
