Writing one sentence per line – That’s How I write

I’ve been writing like this since ages and
I never knew why or how I inculcated the habit. But it has always made writing easier, like I’m typing or replying to a text.
Derek Sivers shared a note on writing one sentence per line, and I can fully relate to it.

As Mr Sivers stated, writing one sentence per line:

  • Helps you judge each sentence on its own
  • Helps you vary sentence length.
  • Helps you move sentences.
  • Helps you see first and last words.

I realized those are the reasons I write one sentence per line.

To add to the pointed he stated, I do not just write like that in my text or code editor. I also write like that in a word documents.
After writing one sentence per line, when I begin editing, it’s easier to rearrange sentences and words, and even swap them between paragraphs.

This method also helps with punctuation, adding commas, dashes, semicolons, and periods becomes easier. It’s also simpler to rewrite phrases, add sentences between paragraphs, and insert linking words and phrases.

This simple writing process has given me more time to research, structure, and organize my writing, even though it takes more time overall. It’s easier to detect long sentences and repetitions. Editing feels more like version control.

Most of the time, my writing starts with just three lines. I keep adding more lines as points, and before I know it, I could have written 5,000 words. This is also how I’m able to play with words, not repeating words in paragraphs, and even rhyme in my poetry, because I can clearly see the first and last words of each line.

Chris Maiorana also wrote about this technique from an Emacs perspective, pointing out benefits like clearer diffs and easier sentence transposing that apply no matter what editor you use.

The only problem I’ve encountered with writing one sentence per line is the one-line paragraph. It works well for online publications because of its catchiness and readability, but during my school projects and assignments, lecturers and supervisors often complain about my one-line paragraphs. I sometimes forget and leave some sentences hanging.

Writing one sentence per line is a good idea and makes writing easier.

It should be noted that this is note a writing rule, and is not a general standard either. Every has their writing style and it’s advisable to stick to what you find this way or the style you are used to. There is no law nor prosecutor for this.
