Am I following any experts in the path of law, technology, privacy and creativity?
Yes.
Tunji Onigbanjo gave me this personal conviction that I can still do what I love alongside law. That, for me, is one of the ways I’ll never find law boring.
I also discovered Ijeoma Ossi during the #EndSARS period, and her work made me pay more attention to how people can use creativity to engage with serious issues.
Then, in the heart of almost every law student, you’ll find names like Gani Fawehinmi, Femi Falana, Afe Babalola, Funke Agbor and Wole Olanipekun, among others, appearing repeatedly in our materials and discussions.
And yes, the case Femi Falana v. Meta Platforms Inc. is still very fresh. It was handled by Femi Falana Chambers, and it is one I’ll continue to follow alongside other developments in this space.
Dr Olumide Babalola is a connection of mine on LinkedIn.
He is a privacy and data protection lawyer and legal scholar, and Chair of the Nigerian Bar Association Data Protection Committee. Through him, I also follow the Data Privacy Lawyers Association of Nigeria (DPLAN).
He was involved in Digital Rights Lawyers Initiative v. NIMC (2021), a case that caught my attention because of its connection to digital rights, privacy and technology.
I used to follow Solomon Okedara, who co-founded the Digital Rights Lawyers Initiative. I came across DRLI years ago when I was outlining some ideas around digital freedom and independence.
That’s it. at least, before now.
Looking again because of this challenge, I’m now also following:
Mrs. Sandra Oyewole.
Her practice cuts across intellectual property, technology, media, entertainment, fintech and data protection. I found her work particularly interesting because of how closely law can sit with the creative industry.
And Mr. Christian Aniukwu, whose work also cuts across intellectual property, technology, entertainment, media and sports, with particular experience in IP portfolio management and brand protection.
Who is still learning? Yes me
