Scattered Voices in my head: The Public on University Education

Graphic image of the post 'Scattered Voices in My head: The Public on University Education' by S David Prince

Why did I ask myself this question “What does a Nigerian university actually mean to the people inside it?”

And boom! I could see almost every face in the school and can help but become omniscient. Just listen to them rant…

“My parents sacrificed to put me here. I cannot afford to leave with nothing but a certificate.”

“Four years, Fees, handouts, Assignments, Exams, NYSC still join, Then unemployment. Wetin I buy exactly?”

“I didn’t come here just for grades.”

“If I can graduate with a 4.8, why shouldn’t that matter?”

“I attend lectures. I submit work. I study. But sometimes I am simply trying to survive.”

“Students don’t read anymore.”

“You teach us from notes written ten years ago and call us lazy when we look elsewhere for knowledge.”

“I don’t care if you later do POS business. Finish your degree first. Get the kpali”

“I started earning before I graduated.”

“You graduated with First Class. Can you actually do the job?”

“Every vacancy asks for experience. Where was I supposed to get experience? Me whey just finish school”

“I know the system is imperfect. But I still want you to think. People are making it in this country, This is my tenth year teaching this course… listen”

“You people spent five years getting a degree. I learnt a trade and started earning.”
“school la scam”

“University changed my life.”

“I didn’t fail university. University simply wasn’t where my life ended.”

“Mark Zuckerberg, Bill gates, the Google brothers, they all dropped out”

Everybody seem to have something to say, A lot still talk in other people’s voice. They comment just because another person says, they follow.

And Now what shall I do with these voices?
Students, Parents, lecturers, employers, graduates, the country

The public opinion. What’s mine? What’s yours?
