Technology is developing fast, and AI might just ruin the world. 😭
Last month, the BBC published an article titled “Why are there concerns AI could threaten humanity, and how real are they?”
Beyond the dramatic headline, what caught my attention was the bigger conversation around AI safety, regulation and accountability.
I remember years back, my first year at The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), our lecturer once asked who knows the full meaning of AI and no one could answer and I was like
” is it Artificial Intelligence?”
I didn’t know it too but there was this 2001 movie I watched as a kid title Artificial Intelligence.
And that’s how I was tagged the tech bro of the class. Just because I answered what AI is.
Fast forward to today even a nursery kid and my grandma knows the term “AI”.
The term is so broad but at least we all know of AI chatbots, GPT, Claude and the likes.
Everyone is using it now and as AI becomes more capable, we’re having to ask questions that go beyond what the technology can do:
Who should be responsible when AI causes harm? How do we protect people’s data? Who owns what AI creates? How should AI systems be governed?
And perhaps most importantly, can the law keep up with technology developing this fast?
These are some of the questions that make Technology Law and AI Governance particularly interesting to me.
And I keep following the different tragic news, speculations, trend and projections around AI, and the more I follow them, the more questions I have.
But my interest in technology didn’t start with AI.Before all this, I was already writing, designing and building. I’ve also preached about what it means for people to have more ownership and control over their content and presence on the internet.
So naturally, I find myself interested in the law around these spaces too; Intellectual Property, Data Protection, Media Law, Technology Law and AI Governance. For me, these aren’t just areas that sound interesting on paper. They are connected to the digital and creative spaces I already care about.
That’s the kind of law student I’m becoming: one interested in where law meets technology, creativity and the way we build on the internet.I haven’t even begin lectures for these topics in school but it’s all clear when you are a member of Premium Law Students Community
