I came across the news that President Tinubu signed the NIMC Act 2026, replacing the 2007 Act.
The new law gives NIMC a broader role in digital identity, authentication and data exchange.
And honestly, it got me thinking.
A stronger digital identity system could help tackle fraud and improve how we access services.
But then comes the other question:
How much of our personal data should the government be able to access or connect?
Section 37 of the Constitution protects our right to privacy, while the NDPA 2023 provides a framework for protecting personal data.
So where should the line be?
Personally, I think we can pursue digital security without making privacy an afterthought.
The technology can be powerful.
The safeguards need to be just as strong.
I’ll come back to this ✍🏾
