So, what does data protection law look like in real life?
Let’s take yesterday’s case, Emmanuel Harunna v. NDPC.
Imagine a PoS business collecting customers’ names, phone numbers and transaction details.
If that business falls within the applicable category of organisations subject to NDPC registration, it cannot simply say, “I collect data because I need it for business.”
There are responsibilities that come with handling people’s data.
So the questions become:
Why am I collecting it?
Do I have a lawful basis?
Have I told the person?
Am I keeping it secure?
This is where law becomes real, not just what the law says, but how it affects everyday life.
